The over 10 student leaders from Makerere University who were arrested today morning as they were preparing to take part in a march to Parliament over campus closure will appear before court in the afternoon.
The leaders with some other students were planning to walk to parliament and petition speaker Rebecca Kadaga about the indefinite university closure.
The arrested students include among others the Guild President Roy Ssemboga and the Guild Clerk Owen Natukunda who were arrested from the university’s main gate
The other group that was arrested from the Parliament includes Jovan Denis Mubiru ( Off Campus Affairs Minister),Paul Sanya Watta, Paul Mutumba who are members of the 82nd Guild Council and a one Rashid Buule, a student at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (Cedat), while others are yet to be identified.
The Police Spokesperson at CPS Afande Kayima said charges of inciting violence contrary to Section 83 of the Penal Code Act would be slapped on the group that was arrested from the Parliament, but when asked about the fate of the group arrested at main gate, he remained silent.
The students arrested from Parliament were ordered to remove their shoes and were escorted into detention. They will all, according to Kayima, appear before Court this afternoon.
By press time, the Guild Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Lameck Ogwal was up and down trying to secure individuals that can act as sureties and help the said suspects secure bail in the afternoon.
“We don’t want a similar instance as that which happened earlier this week to happen again. We don’t want our students remanded and we shall work to secure their Constitutional right to bail,” Ogwal said.
Most of them are currently at CPS.
This incident comes at the heels of the earlier one this week where four students were remanded to Luzira Maximum Prison for protesting the closure of their institution in the city centre.
