Officers at the Central Police Station yesterday evening released the Makerere University students that were arrested in the morning whille they were planning to march to parliament in protest over the institution’s closure.
The said students were arrested at the Parliament of Uganda and taken to the station with threats to charge them for inciting violence contrary to Section 83 of the Penal Code Act. They are Jovan Denis Mubiru, Paul Mutumba, Paul Sanya Watta, Emmanuel Kizito and Danton Niwampangira. These were released on Police bond. Police bond is free of charge (under the law) and is usually granted by the Officer – in – Charge of the station upon oral asking. They are set to appear before the Divisional CID Officer on November 17 to answer to the said charges. Their sureties in the matter were Yosam Bagumirabingi (the embattled Guild Minister of Research and Computer Technology) and Lameck Ogwal the Guild Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs. The said sureties have therefore committed themselves to have the said suspects arraigned before the CID boss on the said date without fail. The Guild President and his group that were arrested from the main gate of the University were released unconditionally. |
