This morning, Police arrested Simom Wanyera the GRC of Makerere’s School of Education and External Studies (Cee) from the institution’s main gate after several days of searching for him.
Wanyera, who was the sole architect of the City Centre riots that had some Makerere students arrested and remanded to Luzira Maximum Prison has been on the Police’s “wanted list” since then.
However, today the student leader was bundled into a Police premio after he was spotted around Ham Towers where the Students’ Guild is holding a press conference, advocating for the opening of the university.
Onlookers say that he (Wanyera) was staging a one-man demonstration against the closure of Makerere whilst shouting “Open Makerere!” When he approached the main gate.
However, when contacted, the Officer in Charge of the patrol, confirmed Wanyera is currently at Wandegeya Police Station from where he would be transferred to the Central Police Station.
“Wanyera wanted to chain himself on the University main gate and the order is that the Makerere is out of bounds. So we had to arrest him,” the officer said.
Chain protests have been seen in Uganda when several protesting Ugandans chained themselves along major roads in town after the arrest of Dr Kizza Besigye.
The Police are not yet specific about the charges that will be placed against Wanyera at the moment.
However, the Lumumba Health Ministry insists Wanyera had come for Hepatitis B vaccination. “Today there is Hepatitis B vaccination at Box and police and the administration okayed it. Wanyera got the first dose month ago so he was mandated to come for a second dose. Why arrest him?” they wondered.
