Last week, four Makerere University Students were arrested while protesting against the arrest of Dr Stella Nyanzi, a research fellow at this University. Information reaching us reveals that the health state in which these students are living in is horribly alarming.

According to the University’s guild information minister, Sylivester Sabiiti, a group of concerned Makerere students visited Luzira prison yesterday to check on these students but they were able to see three of them as the fourth was down battling with illness.
The sick student is identified as Hunnington Mugarura who is reportedly suffering from cough and a terrible skin rash. The current state of the other three is not good either something that has forced Sabiiti to call upon for their immediate release. “The appalling state of our brothers calls for an immediate action. Let us stand up and show solidarity, the MUK solidarity, what happened to the times when an attack on one of us meant an attack on us all???” Sabiiti exclaimed.
If these students are not granted bail in their court hearing set for next Monday 22nd May, they could miss out in the upcoming exams at the University- something that puts their future in jeopardy.
Here is the full statement from Makerere’s information minister;
*Our* *students* *deserve* *freedom* I take this great pleasure and honour to greet the mighty men and women of this great institution, *Makerere* *University*. With a burning rage and great dissatisfaction I pen this piece. Yesterday, a group of concerned students led by the iron lady Doreen Nyanjura went to Luzira to check on the state of the Makerere students arrested last week. It is so unfortunate that their fate was sealed because the magistrate had no time to hear their bailcase, crazy I must say.
We were able to reach out to three of them because the fourth student, Mugarura Hunnington was down with a cough and a terrible skin rash. The appalling state of our brothers calls for an
immediate action. Let us stand up and show solidarity, the MUK solidarity, what happened to the times when an attack on one of us meant an attack on us all???We are approaching a crucial part of our academic times, exams. Are we going to look on as our brothers sit in and rot in the cells??? Are we going to sit back as we watch the fundamental right of education abused??? MAKERERE let us rise up in solidarity with our
brothers in jail.The power of the civilians can never be rivaled. On the 22nd may 2017, our brothers appear in court. Let us stand in oneness, in unity and demand for their release.
MAKERERE UNIVERSITY WE BUILD FOR THE FUTURE.
