Banda is one of those areas mostly comprising of University students
from Kyambogo and surrounding institutions at Nakawa. The cost of
living in this area is high evidenced by high rent bills, expensive
food stuffs and congestion of buildings almost becoming Uganda’s
biggest slam.
The most affected group of people in this area are the students most
of which study from Kyambogo university. For boys, the situation can
be dealt with but the girls are completely running out of control.
Girls have a challenge of sustaining their daily life as well as
making sure they are on the same level with their fellow girls
enjoying high standards.
The current basic things that at least every girl needs are trendy
outfits, expensive phones, makeup and lotions as well as food. While
talking to some of the students, they revealed that it will be
meaningless to own an expensive phone and fail to use whatsapp,
Facebook and other Social platforms. “We use social media to link up
for so many things daily, so everyone needs data everyday,” one of
Kyambogo students revealed.
The broke girls have a major challenge of keeping up to this standard
something that has pushed them to look for quick ways of getting their
needs. Some of the residents around banda informed us that boda boda
men and other kinds of guys have taken advantage of this situation by
offering the girls’ needs in exchange for sex.
This activity has existed for good years but given the changing
economy year by year is something to worry about.
No girl can risk sleeping on an empty stomach no matter how much she may want to close
her legs.
