The quest for independence at the Nakawa based Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has taken yet another epic twist after latest trekking in indicates that staff are unhappy with the decision made by the government to turn MUBS into a mere degree awarding institution instead of a stand alone University.
According to The Insider an online publication, the lecturers led by the Chairman Professional and Academic Staff Union, Isaac Magoola accuse Makerere University main campus Vice Chancellor Professor John Ddumba Ssentamu and retiring old professors of being behind the move to maintain MUBS among other Degree awarding institutions yet MUBS is fit to be elevated to a University with more than 17, 000 students compared to other universities with ridiculously less number of students.
“The old professors are plotting ways of finding jobs after retirement as consultants,” he said.
In January 2012, it was reported in the media that MUBS will break away from Makerere University and reconstitute itself into an independent university, however, this has not happened to date worrying the adminstration more.
MUBS was established in the 1960s as Nakawa College of Business Studies (NCBS), the national college of business studies. It offered business and management diplomas as well as professional training in business. The battle to make MUBS independent is one that is not stopping anytime and is rumoured to be the point of stress for reigning Principal Professor Wasswa Balunywa.
