Former presidential candidate and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) strongman, Dr. Kizza Besigye, has today morning threatened to call for national protests over the indefinite closure of Makerere University.
While addressing a press conference at his home in Kasangati, the FDC leader bashed government and said the Visitation Committee put in place to probe the University is a waste of public resources.
“Previously, a team of eminent academicians and other persons led by Prof. Francis Omaswa conducted an inquiry and came up with a comprehensive report about the problems affecting Makerere university. Regrettably, the recommendations of that comprehensive report were never implemented yet the Omaswa committee was constituted to investigate the same problems,” Besigye observed.
He therefore suggested that the Rwendeire committee just presents the observations made by the previous Omaswa committee instead of wasting tax payers’ money conducting their (over 3 months) research.
Dr. Besigye also called upon Parliament to treat the matter of Makerere University with the importance it deserves by passing a supplementary budget to meet lecturers’ arrears because students’ education is a priority and it is being put to the line.
“We also demand that the University is reopened within 10days. Failure do so, we shall consider calling for national protests,” he added.
Dr. Besigye was accompanied by the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Makerere University Councillors Nyanjura Doreen and Justus Akampurira.
