As had been been anticipated by many, President Yoweri Museveni will on Tuesday, 1st September meet the National COVID-19 taskforce to make a ‘big’ decision on the fate of schools and higher institutions that have been closed for over six months since March, to curb the spread of COVID-19.
President Museveni revealed this while speaking during the National Prayers at State House, Nakasero which were held yesterday (Saturday, 29th Aug).
“We are going to look at the issue of the schools, churches and bars on Tuesday and discuss what we can do. We have realized that the numbers can be managed if people are disciplined. Things can be done but the only problem is the discipline,” President Museveni said.
President Museveni said this citing that the recent youth elections were a very good gesture that crowds can be controlled if people follow public health measures and be disciplined.
Weeks ago, the Education Ministry submitted a readiness report to the president, focusing on phased re-opening of schools starting with candidates (finalists) which would make the numbers of learners manageable and as well, ease the observance of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Just like the saying goes, “what’s meant to be will always find its way” ; It’s a matter of time now until students across the country desperately know what exactly is going to happen to the pending academic year.
We’ll keep you updated.
