Bishop Stuart University held its graduation for the class of 2017/18 students in Mbarara on Friday.
The students attained various awards during its 14th graduation ceremony since its charter from National Council of Higher Education (NICHE) with 12 of the 1,648 students attaining a first class.
The graduation ceremony that was thronged with students, guardians, parents and various staff members took place at the university main campus in Kakoba, Mbarara municipality. In the recent years, the university has had increasing number of student enrollment throughout the years although the number of first class graduands has been declining sharply.
This year alone, only 17 students graduated with bachelors of law while the largest number came from faculty of arts and education followed by business management. Only six students got first class from the faculty of education, four students from business management and developmental studies faculty, and once each from the faculty of applied sciences and law.
According to one of the gradauands who declined to mention his name, the sharp drop in number of first class has been due to students running battles with the university staff and administration on various policies.
“The university has been dragged to court on various occasions by students and in some cases it lost. This among other hostile policies that do not favor students has breaded this gap between students and staff,” he submitted.
However, the university has been running battles with students who have constantly dragged it to court over allegation of favoritism of Anglican students to other religious denominations. Currently, the university has challenged a recent court ruling to amend its guild constitution that favors only Anglicans to contest for guild positions and the ruling will be heard next week on 15th October, 2018 in Kampala.
