Yesterday 9th January 2020, Bishop Stuart University (BSU) Mbarara came out to publicly announce the registration of an agribusiness incubation center mainly to develop student agri-business ideas and products.
This follows the university’s best performance at the recently concluded Regional Universities’ Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) that was held in Ghana in December last year.
Prof. Mauda Kamatenesi, the University’s Vice-Chancellor said that they have had a partnership with a Dutch Foundation (AVSI) since 2017 and have so far received over 200M as an investment in agri-business programs.
She added that it’s high time to register as a company in order to fully utilize the available opportunities because the students’ ideas have to be developed. He then also encouraged the students to develop ideas that will provide industrial solutions to the country through innovations.
James Katumba, a university alumni is now a beetroot yoghurt producer in Mbarara who was also at the launch to encourage more students to do agri-businesses. He has also added a herbal aspect to the normal yoghurt which is the first herbal yoghurt in the country catering for both hunger and acting as medicine to the girls that bleed a lot during their menses.
By the end of this semester, it is said that the university students’ agribusiness will be fully registered as an agribusiness company in Uganda.
