Julius Kateregga, the guild president elect of Makerere University and the runner up Mukisa Joshua left the People Power Movement leader and Kyadondo East legislator Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine speechless when they paid him a courtesy visit over the weekend and embraced each other after a hotly contested guild race that separated them by just over 500 votes.
“Today, the Guild President-elect, Katerega Julius and the runner up Mukisa Joshua accompanied by their campaign teams paid a call on me and we had a wonderful time. I am very proud of these young comrades for exhibiting the highest form of leadership” Bobi Wine posted on social media.
He congratulated the winner and thanked the two for being able to embrace each other after the election as a sign to show that an election isn’t a do or die affair like we’ve been accustomed to. Bobi Wine was particularly dumbfounded by the fact that Makerere University that is a representative of elite youths could embrace the efforts of People Power amid unending attacks that they’re not a wise alternative.
“Seeing enlightened young people embrace our message is an assurance that the future of this nation is great. No matter what the oppressor tries to do, he will not stop this idea whose time has come. The writing is on the wall” Bobi said.
“Every time I interact with the young breed of leaders in Uganda, I see that they are fully alive to the historical mission and role of their generation. Today was no exception. We shall be free!” he added.
The Kyadondo East legislator has already expressed interest in competing with President Museveni for the biggest office in the land arguing that this time is not of Mr. Museveni’s generation and that the young people need to take charge of their destiny instead of merely looking on as it crambles.
The two People Power candidates at Makerere University combined raised over 7,000 votes compared to NRM’s slightly over 1,000 votes that their flag bearer Andrew Julian Taliwaku got and settled for third place.
The effect that People Power had on the election was so significant that the winner, who had been the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) flag bearer, had to rebrand to People Power to take the victory home.
