To give Face of Muk a new look and more fame, the 82nd guild government has this time brought on board celebrities like Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi wine, MP David Bahati and gospel artist Ruyonga.
Th three were unveiled on Friday night from MAK’s main hall during the launch of the annual event is under the theme: Fighting the breast cancer Burden amongst the youths through screening and creating awareness in Uganda.
This year’s Face of MUK intends to spearhead the awareness campaign against breast cancer epidermic amongst women through the use of talents shows like beauty, public speaking, art, and music dance and drama.
Over 97 contestants have already applied. These together with other students and well wishers will participate in a Breast Cancer Awareness Run scheduled for October 23.
“We can’t afford to be swayed away by the challenges we face as young people; we must rise above them to define our own paths and save lives out there. We also can’t afford to keep praying for serenity to accept things we can’t change without consulting our own efforts to change things that others believe can’t be changed” Said Ivan Bwowe, th CEO Face of MUK and former MAK Guild president (2013/14).
As the architect of Face of MUK in 2014, Ivan Bwowe urged the contestants to use the special talents they posses to help and fight breast cancer. This, he said, can be through inspiring and encouraging their friends to do self examination procedures or go for early screening all through dance, public speaking, modeling, poetry and other talents.
“Makerere is Uganda summarized with a population sample from all parts of the country and therefore we have decided to use this opportunity to pass on a Breast Cancer Awareness message to the entire nation.” Bwowe explained.
Asked why breast cancer awareness of all cancers, the Gender, Ethics and Integrity minister
Elizabeth Namugambe, said: “The youth find it a challenge to undress and have medical personnels check them. We thought if we make them aware through this, they can network teach each other methods of personal checking to help detect breast cancer at an early stage and kick it out of Uganda.”
Auditions for contestants will kick off today in different Girls’ halls of residence and hostels. A cancer awareness run will be carried out on Sunday at MAK Freedom Square with free Mammography for all the ladies and the grand finale set for November 4.
The Winner of Face of MUK will get full tuition for 1 academic year and a fully sponsored trip to either U.K. Or Europe. The two runners up will receive Masters Scholarships to the best universities of their choice in the World.
“We are giving out prizes that are academic oriented because we believe Makerere is a center for academic excellence… We are empowering ladies with academic platforms that they’ll use in the future,” cautioned Maria Natalie, the Makerere Vice Guild President.
