National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine has paid a courtesy visit to Richard Ssebuganda, a Makerere university student who lost his hand to a teargas canister explosion during the early February ‘open for all’ protests.
Bobi Wine, who was accompanied by NUP’s general secretary Mr David Lewis Rubongoya, consoled and comforted Richard whose fingers were amputated.
The visit comes days after Rubongoya and Nubian Li visited Richard at Mulago hospital where he is getting medication.
Richard Ssebuganda was injured by a teargas canister that was allegedly shot into his room at Lumumba hall as police tried to put off the 8th February ‘open for all’ students protest.
Makerere university students protested against the decision by the university to conduct blended learning on 7th February despite full re-opening of the economy by the president of the republic of Uganda H.E Yoweri Museveni.
The students claimed that a large section of the students’ population was vaccinated against covid-19 thus didn’t see it reasonable for the institution to conduct online learning.
However, a month later, the university released a revised academic calendar on March 4th, 2022 clearly indicating that students will continue with the blended system of learning despite the protests against it.
Unlike before, Makerere students have been permitted to stay at their respective halls of residence throughout the study period.
