Following the resumption of boda bodas on the roads with a condition of registering every customer’s details, cyclists have resorted to hire private school teachers to register customers’ details at a pay of shs. 300 each.
This move, which will also create employment for the teachers amidst the closure of schools, will assist the boda boda cyclists carry out their duties with ease most especially for the illiterate or under-educated cyclists.
Mr Samuel Wemunya, the chairperson of boda bodas in Namutumba District revealed that they agreed to hire private teachers to help with the work and promised to increase these teachers’ pay with time.
“We have nothing to do for boda bodas who can’t read and write. It is upon them to resign, go to school and return to the profession as educated people,” he said.
Mr Wemunya further adds that they are going to increase the transport fares to cater for these teachers that they hire.
“Where we have been charging Shs1,000, we will now charge Shs1,500; all we want is people who will capture passengers’ details” he said.
“If some teachers are not willing to take the Shs300 offer per passenger, we shall turn to secondary students in the area,” he added.
According to Mr Wemunya, the contracted teachers will sit at their designated stages with the boda bodas and once a passenger comes, they will be the ones to capture his or her details.
There will also be a separate book used to tally the number of passengers the teacher has documented before being paid at 6pm as they retire to their homes in line with the presidential directive.
Since the closure of schools in March, private school teachers have been negatively affected and have consequently cried out to the government for financial assistance which up to now hasn’t been offered.
