Like it has always been for Makerere University freshers in their first weeks of campus, this year’s first-year students of the state-owned University have kicked off their year in style. Yesterday Monday night was a feel good moment as a number of Makerere students were left drowned in booze while having fun at this year’s Mitchellex Bazaar.
Our snoops yesterday visited the area and it turns out to be a must attend campus event with lots of items on sale, Nyamachoma, gaming activities, dancing and eating competitions among others. However, our camera spotted a number of ‘born again’ students who turned the event into preaching sessions to woo the freshers to Christ as a number of other freshmen could be seen galloping booze from local brew to the most expensive alcoholic drinks in town having- it seemed like they were paying for all the liquor missed in high school.
The cars parked outside the venue, the swag showed by these students confirms that even the continuing students were among last night’s drinking spree. Besides drinking, a number of fresh and young fellows were seen coupling up for rare soft dances as well isolating themselves from the noisy crowd.
There was also another event going down at Makerere’s pool side dubbed “Fresher’s fest” where other groups of students converged as they listened to the 21st-century music with better disco equipment than at the Mitchellex Bazaar. However, this pool side event only lasts from 6-10 pm, unlike the Mitchellex that happens all day and all night.
With special different night themes programmed to happen at the pool side, this event is likely to grow bigger as time goes on. The strict security check-up and ambiance makes this fresher’s fest a bit unique as compared to the Mitchellex where there is no security check up on entry.
