Gulu University mourns the death of Dr. Thomas Okello Oyok, a retired psychiatrist with Gulu Regional Referral Hospital and honorary lecturer in the Department of Mental Health at Gulu University. Doctor Oyok passed away at 1:00pm at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor where he was admitted battling Diabetes.
Dr Cyprian Opira, the director Lacor hospital, says that the cause of his death was yet to be established.Oyok was referred at the hospital after he was diagnosed with the disease a month ago.
Doctor Nathan Onyachi, the Director Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, says that the deceased was very instrumental in the psychiatry department especially working with post conflict and trauma affected persons in the Acholi sub region. Oyok had retired three years ago from Gulu regional referral hospital and was now heading a department of mental health at Gulu University.
At the time of his death Dr Oyok was serving as a study psychiatrist with Promoting Research and Extesion on Nutrition and Aids in Primary Health Care Setting (PRENAPS) and was responsible for conducting psychiatric exams, referral and follow-up of study subjects diagnosed with mental health problems. Khalid Mahmoud, the Assistant PRO Gulu University, said that Oyok’s death was a great blow to the university as he has been at the centre of many studies and research at the University.
He was one of the Watoto Church Gulu elders and was actively involved in ministry. He will be buried in his ancestral home in Omiyanyima sub county in Kitgum district.
