The Makerere University Business School (MUBS) is currently abuzz with excitement and controversy as the Guild Presidential race for the 2024-2025 academic year gains momentum. Among the hopefuls vying for the coveted position is Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior, son of the former Principal of MUBS, Professor Wasswa Balunywa, whose tenure ended on May 31, 2023.
However, a cloud of uncertainty looms over Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior’s eligibility to contest for the Guild President position. In a covert investigation by Campus Bee, sources at MUBS have confirmed that indeed, JWB got a retake in computing mathematics during his second year of study.
The MUBS Guild constitution stipulates that aspirants for the Guild President or Guild Parliament (GRC) positions must have maintained normal progress throughout all semesters and should not have received any retakes. Despite this requirement, Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior has been actively campaigning for the presidency through various channels including social media, on-campus activities, and engagements at students’ halls of residence.

This move has raised eyebrows within the student community, prompting questions about the intentions behind Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior’s campaign. The Dean of Students’ office, responsible for overseeing guild activities, has circulated guidelines for candidates, emphasizing adherence to the rules.
However, reports indicate the presence of a group on campus allegedly pushing for Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior’s candidacy as an independent candidate, despite the potential violation of the guild constitution. The group’s alleged aim is to expose the current leadership of the institution and incite chaos, potentially through student strikes, if Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior is not nominated.

In response to these developments, several students voiced their concerns about upholding the university’s rules and maintaining peace within the institution. “We have rules that guide us as students,” remarked one student. “Whoever goes against them will be held responsible and accountable as an individual. MUBS is a peaceful University, and we will not be coerced into creating instability for personal gain.”
As the Guild Presidential race heats up, all eyes are on MUBS to see how the situation unfolds and whether Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior’s candidacy will proceed amidst the controversy surrounding his eligibility. The university administration and student body remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of fair elections and adherence to established guidelines.
