The Makerere University Council, which is the top decision making body of the institution has bowed to pressure and suspended the numerous fees increments they had made in different Colleges at the institution of higher learning, a statement from the vice chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe reads.
The council had voted to increase fees charged per student from the College of Health Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Humanities to a tune of upto shs. 5M per semester.
The said changes were to take effect next academic year, which is essentially next semester.
The vice chancellor said that after consultation with the University Council chairman Eng. Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem, they have decided to suspend the policies pending consultations with the student leadership.
This was after a consultative meeting between the students and the administration was organised today to look through the issues raised by the striking lot.
From Monday, Makerere University has been nearly a Police barracks after students declared violent demonstrations if the vice chancellor and his team did not revoke their decisions on controversial issues such as tuition increment, banning of food in halls and privatisation of the same halls among other things.
The actions of the students even prompted government through the spokesperson, Mr. Ofwono Opondo, to threaten to strip the current management of their duties and allocate the university control to the army.
Ofwono Opondo said these at a public lecture of Law School academician Dr. Kabumba Busingye dubbed “Militarisation of the Public Service in Uganda.”
