Makerere University council meeting that was held today and meant to end lecturers’ strike has yielded no results after the lecturers trashed all the resolutions that were made.
According to the chairman of the council, Eng Dr Charles Wana-Etyem, lecturer’s issue of uncleared incentive arrears will be resolved next month.
“The council will in one month’s time review the resolution arrived at by management, Muasa [Makerere University Academic Staff Association] and council dated 24th September 2016… the council urges all members of Muasa to resume work,” Wana-Etyem said after the meeting.
In response, the chairman Muasa, Dr Muhammad Kiggundu said that all these resolutions are “comedy” and they, as Muasa, will not follow them.
However, Kiggundu said they will again hold a general assembly on Monday to see a way forward.
Makerere lecturers went on strike on Wednesday, October 25, protesting the university’s failure to pay them their incentive arrears for the last eight months estimated to be around Shs 40 billion.
Since Wednesday, most lecturers haven’t stepped in class with exception of a few in the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS).
For now, both day and evening students will have to keep in their hostels and halls until this row ends.
