Makerere lecturers through their association Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) have this morning, December 19th 2016, resolved to call off their strike that has been on since October this year.
The suspension of the strike comes at a time when the President, who closed the institution, said it is the willingness of the lecturers to teach that will have the university reopened for business. This is the first step perhaps!
It was a close call during voting time as 81 voted to end the strike while 56 voted in opposition and believed the strike needed to go on.
The lecturers who were paid one month’s incentives last week still demand upto 8 months of unpaid arrears.
President Museveni indefinitely closed Makerere University on November 1st this year following the staff strike over their unpaid allowances.
