In a closed-door meeting with a section of students’ leaders that took place in the Council Room of the main building, the Vice Chancellor Prof John Ddumba Ssentamu has agreed to revoke the suspension of fifteen students.
Prof Ddumba also said that he is not solely responsible for the drastic decision to suspend the students.
“I followed the right procedure to take this decision. I got those names from the Dean of Students and I acted accordingly with regards to the University Rules and Regulations,” Ddumba said
This followed a demonstration that was organised by students requesting to have their colleagues reinstated back to the University and the decision to suspend them rescinded.
The Vice Chancellor further said that from the Guild President’s notice, he acknowledges that the right procedure might not have been followed while suspending the students and he will institute a Committee of Investigation into the matter.
“What is quite obvious is that the damages will be compensated. There is no doubt about that,” Prof Ddumba authoritatively stated.
He ended by promising that the suspension has been revoked and that the students can access University services.
The meeting was also attended by the Dean of Students, the Academic Registrar and the Heads of Security in Makerere.
