The Makerere University Council are to hold an emergency meeting scheduled for Tuesday 1st November, 2016 at 8 a.m. The meeting whose agenda is still unknown is rumoured to be one that will temporarily close the institution.
The GRCs have vowed to undertake any measures to make sure that the University is not closed under any circumstances. This comes following the impasse in Makerere University at the moment where lecturers, under their umbrella association Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), have vowed not to step in lecture rooms until their incentives are met, the Guild Legislative body held an impromptu meeting on Monday night to forge a way forward. The Guild President, Mr. Roy Ssemboga in his address to the members present during the meeting insisted that the situation at hand cannot be solved by dialogue and that the students should not just look on.
“Even with threats to close the University if the lecturers’ strike continues, I honestly believe that this situation cannot be solved by dialogue.”This comes after the MUASA general assembly that sat at the School of Education and resolved not to resume teaching unless their arrears are met. Reports from the University Finance Committee indicate that 75% of the Makerere expenditure goes to salaries and the 25% is what actually manages the institution. The University Council, in their communication to MUASA maintained their stand that the incentives were not budgeted for and there is no way they can raise that amount. The majority GRCs who were overly angered by the current situation in the University, vowed to demonstrate until all the concerned parties that include the University Management, MUASA and Government amicably resolve the situation and lecturers get back to lecture rooms. |
