Presdent Museveni has this evening issued an order directing for the immediate closure of Makerere University “to guarantee safety of persons and property”. This, according to a Facebook post made by the President’s press secretary Don Wanyama.
The President’s directive follows a student strike today morning that spilled over into Kikoni and other neighboring areas where striking students went on a looting and property-destruction spree.
Until this moment, rumours of the impending closure of the university were rife on campus following an emergency university council meeting today morning and the subsequent summoning of the Council Chairperson Eng. Dr. Charles Wana Etyem to a meeting with the president at State House.
This is a developing story, we shall keep you updated.
