Makerere University council has issued a statement indicating that they are not able to pay monthly salaries for lecturers who are on strike demanding for arrears.
According to the chairman Makerere University council Eng Dr Charles Wana-Etyem lecturers will again receive their salaries when the university has been reopened.
“Though the government has released its [60 per cent] portion to the wage bill as appropriated, Makerere University is unable to make its contribution due to the closure of the university,” reads part of the letter that is dated November 25.
Wana-Etyem added: “The purpose of this Letter is to inform you the the university shall not be able to pay the salaries until the university is open and students have paid fees.”
The appropriate wage bill that Wana-Etyem talks about indicates that government pays 60 per cent of the lecturers’ salaries while Makerere adds the remaining portion.
The letter is copied to the minister of education and sports, the ministry of public service, the attorney general among other concerned offices.
The chairman Makerere University Academic Staff Association (Muasa) Dr Muhammad Kiggudu could not be reached for comment as his known contact was off.
Makerere university was undefinately closed on November 1 by President Museveni.
