After an election held today morning at Makerere University in a bid to find the next Vice-chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe has emerged winner after he was voted by Makerere University Council. Nwangwe emerged victor with 16 votes followed by Prof Baryamubeeba with four votes whereas Prof Edward Kirumira garnered a paltry two votes.
Nawagwe’s election by the University Council today puts him in the safest position to become the next Vice Chancellor of Uganda’s biggest University since he has been approved by all the three stakeholders (the search committee, the University Council, and the Senate). It should be noted that yesterday the Senate also voted in his favor with a whopping 77%. On the other hand, Kirumira and Baryamureeba lost the Senate’s voting with 70% and 64% respectively.
According to the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act (UOTIA) 2001, a VC shall be appointed on terms and conditions determined by the University for five years and shall be eligible for re-appointment for one more term.
The law also provides that the senate sends three names to the Council, the University’s governing body, which then chooses two names to forward to the chancellor, who then names the VC.
Though eligible to run for a second term, when asked whether he will be seeking re-appointment, Ddumba was none committal.
