It has fallen within Campusbee’s earshot that the private caterers contracted last year by Makerere University to prepare meals for students staying inside halls of residence have abandoned their cooking tools due to the institution’s delay to pay for their services.
A source has told Campusbee that the private caterers at Mary Stuart and Nkurumah/Nsibirwa halls of residence have taken around three months without being paid by the University and as a result, they have decided to suspend preparing meals for the students currently staying there on recess.
Some of the affected students have told Campusbee that they woke up to go to their dining halls only to be welcomed by squeaky clean serving tables as no breakfast had been prepared for them. Right now as Campusbee types the story, some students are saying that there are seemingly no plans by the caterers to prepare lunch or supper for them. An attempt to speak to one of the service providers hit a dead-end as the contact person expressed fear of reprisals from the university.
However, we have managed to speak to the university’s guild president Mr. Bala David who says that the delay to pay the private caterers was caused by the expiry of the term of office of the university’s secretary who also doubles as the accounting officer a few months back. However, Mr. Bala has assured Campusbee that money has been wired to the accounts of the private caterers and everything should be back to normal very soon.
Campusbee is still making investigations on this development and will bring you updates later on.
