Police was on Tuesday afternoon forced to fire teargas to disperse students of Makerere university that were demonstrating against the annulment of the guild presidential elections.
Bazil Mwotta, together with his supporters wants to hold a procession to parliament but has been stopped by police. “By illegally denying the School of Education students the right to vote, the respect to their choice and outcome of their election is a threat to each student of this UNIVERSITY. It is this way that this University continues to undermine our contribution to the Ivory tower, that has resulted into passing draconian policies that hurt the entire student body. The time has come now for us to say to this University that we have had enough. We demand the respect we deserve,” Mwotta charged.
After the recently concluded MUK Guild presidential elections where Bazil Mwotta emerged winner in a tight race with Roy Ssemboga, the University tribunal ordered a recount of votes at the faculty of Education for all the Presidential aspirants.
This came following a petition that was filed by Roy Ssemboga in protest of the electoral processes which he said was “marred by irregularities.” Results from polling stations at the faculty of education were nullified and a recount was done yesterday on the 21st March 2016 at the Guild offices and main building respectively.
