Uganda that played hosts to the 2018 World University Netball Championship have utilized the home advantage to claim glory in the week long championship that was held in the newly constructed indoor games arena at Makerere University in Kampala.
The university version of the She-Cranes won narrowly over the 2016 champions South Africa with a 44:43 win. South Africa were just a point shy to draw the game and deny the hosts this highly anticipated victory in the games.
The hosts maintained their 100% unbeaten run having won all their previous games with convincing margins. Against Zimbabwe, Uganda led 50-2 at half time before increasing their lead to win 104-10.
On Wednesday, Uganda also humbled Sri Lanka 133-24 having started the tournament with a 105-16 win over the United States of America (USA).
Earlier on before their final game, Rashid Mubiru the team’s head coach had told reporters that they are channeling inspiration from the senior team of the She-Cranes.
“We are determined to win this trophy just like the senior team won the Africa Cup. We continue to remain focused and motivated to win all the games although we know facing South Africa will not be an easy task,” he said.
And indeed, it was an uphill task.
The tournament attracted seven teams that are Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, United States of America (USA), Sri Lanka, Singapore and Zimbabwe.
Jamaica, Namibia, Botswana and Australia all pulled out of the championship.
England won the inaugural event held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2012 and South Africa later won in 2016 when the event was held in Miami, the United States.
