The highly anticipated Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA) elections that had taken university students by storm have been called off.
Highly placed sources at Kabaleega Senior Secondary School in Masindi, the venue for the election have intimated to Campus Bee that “out of nowhere they saw military personnel ordering them to vacate the premises because the election had been called off.”
Some sections of people in Masindi say it is a security pre-requisite because President Museveni is expected in the district for this year’s NRA Liberation day celebrations.
However, we are also told that a one Agaba who had been in last year’s election petitioned the voting process and secured a court injuction barring the new elections from taking place and also a hefty sum of shs100 million in costs that will be incurred by the association before any progress is allowed.
While speaking to Campus Bee, Imran Kasujja the guild speaker of Makerere University who has been in the race for UNSA speaker comfirmed the allegation.
“We are not certain about the time the election will actually take place. Until that sum is remitted, I dont think we will be able to hold the election”, Kasujja said.
The election had attracted several high placed individuals in top university’s and institutions of higher learning around the country.
Makerere University’s Thomson Tayebwa, Law Development Centre’s (LDC) Okot p’Bitek Junior and Shahali Mugamba the guild president of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) among others were contesting for Presidency of the association, whereas Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and Makerere University’s guild vice presidents Mackline Asiimire and Maria Nnatabi were both vying for Finance secretary.
