Omondi Micheal, 21, a student of Business Administration at Makerere University was abducted by police flying squad about a month ago at the Busia border as he returned from his Kenyan home.
According to family members, Omondi is being detained at the notorious Nalufenya torture chamber because he is one of the suspects involved in the killing of the fallen Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Kaweesi (RIP). Police allege that Omondi drove the assailants who murdered AIGP Kaweesi regardless of the fact that the first police statement indicated that the killers were riding motorcycles.
Omondi’s sister Awino Mariam exclusively talked to Campus Bee on Wednesday morning and below are the excerpts of the interview;
It was two weeks before Easter when my brother Omondi Mike was traveling back from Kisumu. At around 11pm, the same day, I got a call from his friend, a one Blaze, who also doubles as a crime preventer in Busia. He informed me that Police flying squad, who were acting on ‘orders from above’ arrested my brother from the border and was taken to Nalufenya police post in Jinja.
He’s accused of driving the assailants that murdered AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi but my brother had never committed any crime. The only thing he was struggling with at the time was maybe his girlfriend being pregnant. That is normal. I continued communicating with Blaze, who informed me that the IGP Kale Kayihura says that my brother is a very “dangerous boy and a criminal”.
My brother has never driven a vehicle, he has not permit and does not know how to drive- not even a motorbike. All he knows is to ride ‘manyi gakifuba’ (bicycle). We have known of his detention for close to two months now.
We have been avoiding the media trying to solve this with the police institution but all in vain. Our family lawyer and I have tried to meet Kayihura but he has been dodging us. We have asked to see our brother but police won’t let us access him. We are asking let Omondi be arraigned in court, they claim they’re still doing investigations…the parents are dejected! What kind of human rights violation is this?
