Bunyoro plans to start a university this year, Daily Monitor reports.
“By October, we shall have finalised all the preparations and be ready to start the first ever kingdom’s university,” Bunyoro’s education minister Harriet Businge said.
She made the revelation while addressing students at the kingdom’s chambers on Wednesday. The group had turned up for applications to obtain scholarships being offered by the kingdom.
The kingdom is offering 300 university scholarships to successful applicants, especially to students hailing from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds.
Ms Businge said the kingdom is hopeful that the central government and local governments in Hoima, Kibaale, Masindi, Buliisa and Kiryandongo districts will support its initiative.
“We have for long prayed that government starts a public university in Bunyoro but our prayers have never been answered. We have decided to start our own with a hope that government will complement our efforts,” Ms Businge said.
