Professor Paul Waako, the Vice Chancellor of Busitema University, has been elected as the new chairperson of the University Vice Chancellors’ Forum (UVCF).
The announcement came during the forum’s meeting held today at Kabale University in southwestern Uganda.
Prof. Waako succeeds Professor George Openjuru Ladaah of Gulu University, who has been steering the influential body that represents leaders from Uganda’s 54 accredited universities – comprising 11 public and 43 private institutions that collectively serve over 200,000 students nationwide.
The election, which took place on February 17, 2025, marks a new chapter for the UVCF, which was established in 1997 to provide a unified platform for university leaders to address common challenges in higher education.
Notable attendees at today’s meeting included university dignitaries, Prof. Mary Okwakol, Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), and representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports.
Prof. Waako, a pharmacologist by training, brings extensive experience in academic leadership to his new role.
Prior to heading Busitema University, he served in various capacities at Makerere University’s College of Health Sciences and has been instrumental in advancing research and innovation in Uganda’s public university system.
