Uganda Christian University opened the year in style with a bloody ‘strike’. Well in UCU any thought about demonstrating is considered a strike. The threat to strike was over the apparent lack of communication about the departure of Rev. Tweheyo Milton, long serving Director of students’ Affairs. The threat was a real strike in UCU talk.
April brought with it a fever that sprawled to Mbale. The hajji and hajjatis had to be quelled down by the sounds of exploding copper. A game between the Basoga and Sudanese turned rowdy. The threat to strike was interpreted by the authorities for an act of war. The sound of cocked guns quickly silenced IUIU.
In Makerere university, The Luo community in conjunction with friends of justice braved the cold noon rain in a show of solidarity. The pack armed with a banner took to the Makerere streets singing and chanting against mob justice. This was a way of condemning the ugly stain that manifested itself in a group of blood thirsty students beating up and killing a suspected thief. The deceased turned out to be an old student of the university. The death of Ojok still haunts Makerere university.
October madness rained upon Kyambogo university. Students rose up in arms and meted out unprecedented violence upon university furniture. Never mind the acts of vandalism were directly concerned about the absence of chairs in lecture rooms. The Kyambogo spokesperson blamed the lack of chairs on some of the Kyambogo students’ thieving ways who apparently stole some of the school furniture. Why do Kyambogo students steal university chairs??? The ill prepared strike was easily quelled.
A day before; on the 5th day of October, the strike giants at the rowdy hillside of Makerere didn’t disappoint. They rose up against the 60% tuition policy and thereafter rejected the 6 week 100% tuition policy. The students angry as drought bees, picked their infamous red gowns, and undressed trees. The fresh tree branch wielding red army staged a massive three day strike that continued into the night. The highlights of the strike was;
•The beating up of Bala David. The guild president was beaten up and accused of being prof. Ddumba Ssentamu’s plaything in addition to being a cult member of illuminati and for his refusal to support the student strike.
•Makerere university students raided canteens and looted food out of saucepans in the Africa Hall cafeteria. The stone hurling squad was engaged in running battles with police.
The lows of the October strike was the firing of expired tear gas into University Halls of residence. The battle was ultimately won by Makerere university students.
Mid December, a banch of naked Makerereans with towels draped around their waists trekked to the estates block demanding why their wasn’t water flowing. One of the estates vehicle was towed all the way to Mitchell hall in protest. Another strike broke out in Lumumba over a power outage.
These strikes resulted Into no serious injuries nor deaths.
