NKUMBA: Fresh riots at Nkumba University resumed this morning after Julius Byarugaba, the guild president, who had been in Kabale for Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA) workshop made an appearance at the campus. The outraged students beat up Byarugaba but was immediately rescued by police. The students accuse their guild president of signing and endorsing the fees increments and not participating in the strike.
Police fires teargas to disperse the rowdy students and arrests were made. Police has instructed the university administration to close the university and students have been asked to park their belongings.
The students demonstrated because of ‘abnormal’ fees increment. For example, a retake which has been at 50,000 is now at 200,000 and a missed paper that cost 20,000 is now at 100,000/=.
