The anti-riot police was on Sunday evening forced to fire tear gas after students from seven institutions invaded the tent which was hosting the Guest of honor, John Bosco Namara, the Kabale District Youth Chairperson at the Kabale District Guild leaders Association ( KADGLA) boys’ football competitions.
The competitions officially kicked off on Friday, October 19th in which over seven institutions from Kabale District took part.
Among the institutions include; Uganda College of Commerce (UCC-Kabale), African College of Commerce and Technology (ACCT-Kabale), National Teachers College (NTC-Kabale), Bishop Barham University College (BBUC) , Kabale University, Uganda Martyrs University Kabale (UMU) and AICM- College of Science and Technology.
Information reaching us indicates that chaos erupted as a result of a controversial decision taken by the referee during penalty shootouts. The chaos started at around 6pm during penalty shootouts of a final game between Kabale University and Uganda College of Commerce – UCC Kabale. The game was played at Kigezi High School Lower playground in Kabale Municipality which ended goalless after 90 minutes.
Chaos was sparked off after a UCC player failed to score a penalty. However, the referee (identified as Chance Akampa) ruled it as a goal.
Led by their goalkeeper, Andrew Nkurunungi, Kabale University players and students turned furious as they insisted that the ball never entered the goal. The chaos later forced anti-riot police under the command of Henry Kisembo, the commander of the Field Force Unit at Kabale Police Station and George William Okello, the Officer-in-Charge of Kabale University Police Post to intervene and calm down the situation.
Apparently, the angry students were trying to lynch the referee before police intervened in the matter. The chaos left Rachael Ndinawe, the Uganda College of Commerce Guild Speaker in a critical condition and she was rushed to Rugarama hospital.
Benson Tumwesigye and Ronald Muheise that are students of Uganda College of Commerce were arrested yesterday and are currently being held at Kabale Police Station.
The game was suspended until further notice.
