The Chinese Ambassador to Uganda has awarded scholarship opportunities to twenty four Makerere University students.
The scholarship is one of the mutual benefits from the China-Uganda relationship, aimed at helping brilliant yet academically challenged Ugandan students.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe received the scholarship from H.E Zhang Lichang (Chinese Ambassador to Uganda) at an award ceremony of the Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarship held on Tuesday July 26th, 2022 at Makerere’s senate building.
The beneficiaries were selected from different colleges and schools basing on their outdone academic performance.
While speaking to the beneficiaries, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe the institution’s vice chancellor thanked the Chinese ambassador for always supporting financially challenged students.
Professor Nawangwe urged the beneficiaries to work hard and always think of developing their country.
According to the Chinese ambassador H.E Zhang Lichang, close to 100 students have benefited from the scholarship in the past five consecutive years.
“For five consecutive years, nearly 100 students have received financial support to fulfill their dreams of life through the Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarship.” Zhang said.
He further noted that china has provided over 5000 training opportunities and government scholarships to Ugandans.
Wycliff Tulyahabwe, one of the beneficiaries thanked China for its continuous educational support to financially disadvantaged students.
“Am very happy today because I have been granted a second chance (cohort) to study. Its my pleasure that the People’s Republic of China is providing free education to me who is economically disadvantaged.” Wycliff said.
The scholarship implementation will be done by Makerere University gender mainstreaming directorate.
