The Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Mbale City, Pamela Watuwa has advised the female students of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) to work hard in their studies if they have chosen to challenge in line with the campaign theme for 2021 International Women’s Day Celebrations.
Watuwa made the remarks on International Women’s Day Celebrations held on Monday, 8th March, 2021 at IUIU Main Campus in Mbale City.
“Education is a great game changer for girls and women around the world. We are not doing well in some sectors and I can give you an example. Today, we have very few women who are in procurement sector. Even if we can call for jobs, women cannot show up. For us to be able to compete, we must be in classroom. We must see a girl child in class,” RCC Watuwa who was the Guest of Honor said.
She said women must work collaboratively to make a greater impact in the world. According to Watuwa, women are strong enough to make an impact even in the current COVID-19 pandemic time but this can be achieved they are united.
“The International Women’s Day theme for Uganda is ‘Building on Women Strength for the better future in COVID-19 world .’ One woman can make a difference but together we can develop the world,” she said.
In her remarks, the Principal of Uganda Christian University (UCU) – Mbale Campus, Mary Manana who was the Guest Speaker urged the students to always follow their dreams.
“Choose to challenge. Do a course that you want to do. Do something that will also benefit the community. Insist in doing what you need to do.” Manana said.
The Lady Vice Guild President of the Islamic University in Uganda Students’ Union Fatumah Nakibuule told the students to prepare themselves for the future by making education their first priority.
“Let us all respect women. Women are priceless. We shall also become mothers and we must start now preparing ourselves to be trailblazing women. Let us work hard in class,”
“Let us respect our lecturers and maintain good morals that will help us be productive mothers. I am urging you to emulate our mothers back home. They are true example of trailblazers for they invest their efforts to see us battling for our dreams here. Super women are not born but they are made. Our stay at the Islamic University in Uganda should help us become super women. Let us utilize our stay here profitably by becoming women who will voice views that will change the world for the better,” Nakibuule said.
The Lady Vice Guild President advised the students to emulate the successful woman holding several top positions at IUIU.
“Islamic University in Uganda has women in top positions that are worth to be our role models. We need to learn a lot from them. On this special day, let us also celebrate them,”
“This university has the first female Academic Registrar Dr Halima Wakabi Akbar. This must give us hope that everything is possible as long as we are passionate, determined and hard-working. This university has female Head of Departments, Dean of Faculties that we must follow in their footsteps. Let us be hungry women who are passionate to learn from these successful women” she said.
