Christmas is here, there isn’t a season that summons as many memories, so much treasured nostalgia, so much joy like Christmas. Everyone looks forward to Christmas, including Mother Nature, the vast blue skies are often clear, stars as bright as gold coins glitter and glow, upon the vast bluish darkness, voices of the warmest kind fill the air, scents of the spiciest nature tickle our noses. We all adore Christmas, and the sounds she brings.
On Wednesday afternoon, students from the prestigious Makerere school of law, raised their voices and sang songs sung by students before them, songs that appeal to all, songs first sang by the heavenly choir that cold summer night in Bethlehem. Makerere law students engaged in the annual law school christmas carols competition at st. Francis chapel.
Church started filling up by midday with students from other colleges and schools arriving in droves. 3rd years were first on stage, they started of on a rather mournful tempo with a rather melancholic oh holy night; emotions of the passionate nature were evident on their faces while they crooned away, heavenly voices accompanied by keyboard keys and guitar strings strum by Mwesigwa Timothy. The soulful song was soon replaced by a faster oh come let us adore him, whose tempo they tactically increased to suit the body swaying rhythm amid ululations from classmates. Prior to their performance, a gentleman wowed the congregation with his violin abilities!
A five man choir of 1st years put up a fair show,singing the classic,” Little drummer boy.” whose lyrics read;
Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pumA new born King to see, pa rum pum pumpumOur finest gifts we bring, pa rum pumpum pumTo lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum….
They seemed ill prepared, didn’t put up the best show! The church cheered them on nonetheless.
2nd years and defending champions blew everyone away with the quality of their voices. The bevy of five girls, enchanted all with the ease with which they switched from high keys to low keys and back like they’d survived on fresh honey, milk, bananas and dew for a week or two if their fruity voices were anything to go by. They, without doubt ensnared the church with the blend of talent, impeccable harmony and choice of symphonies; Glory in eccelesis, -There’s a child
Their delivery was; well-crafted, plummy, warm! One would have thought the salvation choir had escaped out of the pearly gates; you could feel the passion ebbing through every word, brilliant.
The fourth years put up the most dramatic of shows. If the 2nd years were the salvation choir, then the 4th years were the military wing. Theirs was a miniature representation not the salvation choir but rather the salvation army from the commotion they brewed. They creatively dramatised the birth of Christ, with a pink nosed, red pawed, white stuffed teddy bear wrapped in a shawl representing baby Jesus. “Joseph” had the infamous red gown flowing freely about him. Baby jesus, received a khaki envelope similar to those dished by M7, and an Ipad from one of the three wise men; who arrived clad in raven black suits. The 4th years literally bulldozed their way to victory, they sang joy to the world. Their rather dramatic choir conductor was a sight to behold, he swayed, his body, waved his sinewy arms wildly in the air, he wrapped his craze with something similar to polite a bow, one hand on his waist, the other behind his back, and bowed like an el matador!
A solo performance from Makwasi William, a rather extremely talented guitarist from school of social sciences was the musical icing of the day.
A cake was awarded to the day’s winners (4th years) who shared the same with the entire church. First years came last, right before them were the 3rd years, the second years who felt cheated came second.
