Makerere University’s Mitchell Hall Leaders have issued a statement following the suspension of eight of their colleagues for allegedly attacking University Hall (UH) residents. Through the Dean of Students, the Makerere University Management threatened to close Mitchell Hall over violence.
According to a letter signed by Adupa James (Hall Chairperson) and Seninde Peter, the Mitchell Hall Speaker, there is no proof indicating that indeed Mitchell Hall residents were behind the said attacks that left cars and windows at UH destroyed.
Instead, the Mitchell Hall leaders have also faulted the administration for failing to intervene when the same acts of violence happen at their hall.
“That we are further astonished that the committee does not state that Mitchell Hall has been attacked by students from various halls of residence but rather states that we are known for perpetually involving in violent clashes.” Mitchell Hall’s statement to the Makerere University Administration reads in part.
“Management okayed the Mitchellex Finalist Dinner which was held on the 11th day of December, 2021; On this day, residents of nkrumah hall attacked us while we enjoyed with our beautiful girlfriends from Complex Hall. This function took place in the Mitchell Dinning Hall; University property including window panes were broken and property of our service providers.” The statement reads further.
The furious Mitchell Hall residents, who believe that they are being framed for the UH attacks have further told the university management that closing their hall will mean closing the entire university since several students like hanging around Mitchell while others are residents there.
“We are also shocked to hear that management is considering the option of closing Mitchell Hall as investigations to identify the perpetrators continue. We reiterate that these are still unidentified to us. It will be unfair for you to close a hall that Is accessed by majority of the studeni’s community. And also closing Mitchell Hall means closing the University, simply because Mitchell Hall is a home for all university students while physically at campus.” The statement reads.
Campus Bee understands that Mitchell Hall leaders had suggested meeting with the university administration today, Thursday 10th March 2022 regarding the matter.
