Today students belonging to Nakawa based Makerere Business School University decided to take matters into their own hands and paint a zebra crossing right in front of the small gate. This was after the students asked the Uganda National Roads Authority and Police next to the campus to improvise humps or a zebra crossing in front of the small gate to control the over speeding vehicles that had already proved a threat to the students using that particular gate.
This comical event started out as a normal demonstration when students headed by guild president, Yoram Banyenzaki, stuffed with basins of paint and brushes strolled towards the Kampala-Jinja road next to YUASA (a car bond) to paint the zebra crossing.
Student by student gathered by the road carrying manilla charts inscribed with various words describing their grievances and sorrowful touch for their fallen comrades….it was like MUBS was having an assembly by the road side. Shouts, loud drums and yells ensued filling the whole atmosphere. Thereafter these chaps got bolder therein blocking the Kampala-Jinja road hence deterring traffic.
The students’ hooliganism soon escalated. They started pelting stones at the taxis, a move that prompted police led by newly appointed Kampala East RPC Andrew Kaggwa to retaliate with tear gas and “kiboko“. These students who tried copying from their fathers, Makerere University couldn’t managed the pangs and heat from the canes and tear gas police offered for free. Soon, the outraged students had dispersed into thin air, many hiding in the nearby rolex stalls and “bufundas”
RPC Kaggwa has promised the students to keep calm as they will enter into talks with UNRA in order to solve the zebra crossing issue. Police is still stationed at the various entrances of the institution as the students bewildered are caving in their hostels.
