As the festive holiday was about to end, students and staff of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) received news that the canteens which used to offer food at cheaper prices were demolished.
When this semester began on Saturday 25th January 2020, students witnessed what they had been rendering as a rumour when they found ruins of what was formerly the haven of goodness. The university managed to secure three service providers to provide good quality food to the MUST community. The two of them operate within the Town campus while Buffalo Resort has been endorsed for the Kihumuro campus.
However, students complained about the prices which the above service providers offer their food at saying that they are not favourable and they going to affect their budget of the semester since they were used to the prices of the old service providers.
On Wednesday of this week, the University top management held a meeting with the Guild Executive which was cleared by the University Vice Chancellor Professor Celestino Obua. He requested the students to bear with the situation because it was aimed at improving the hygiene of feeding areas.
“The standard of the canteens did not match the basic quality defined by the university of Science and Technology and hence we had requested them to vacate the premises some time back. This was done to ensure that we feed on something that is prepared in a healthy environment and there isn’t bias behind it.” Professor said.
MUST has a population of over 4000 students and all cannot be fed by the available service providers and they were advised to look for other alternatives nearby.
“The university kitchen was designed to be used by a maximum of two service providers currently. We have tried our level best to negotiate with the service providers to provide affordable services tailored to favour student pockets. Students can also still get food from the nearby areas of TASO Village, Kashanyarazi among others at affordable prices.” he added.
