With a decision that came up with a mix of reactions, it’s now confirmed that six law students will be in a race to see who will be the next President of the Law Society for the Mukono-based Uganda Christian University. In what many still regard as an administration arm, the UCU Law Council made a decision that candidates who had been vetted out by the Law Society Electoral Commission be returned to the race and also appear on the ballot paper.
This came after there was a serious legal hearing on determining whether vetting had been conducted legally or not, with the side representing not being satisfied with what was happening in the hearing they decided to walk out hence the hearing happening in their absentia.
According to our sources, one of the candidates that returned to the race has strong connections which is the reason why the Faculty of Administration forced the Law Council to come up with the ruling that was in his favour. Other sources also indicate that these candidates who are Maseruka Edrine and Wafula Derrick Oscar were much aware that they would be returned to the race and the hearing before the council was only a show-off but the outcomes had been determined already.
As of now, candidates in the race include Maseruka Edrine, Oyet Joel, Akatukunda Dorothy, Wafula Derrick Oscar, Agaba Jonathan Philemon and Kitandwe Rhodine who are all in their 3rd year and will be fighting to take over from the current who is Tumwebaze Elizabeth.
What remains in contention, however, is whether all the candidates that had been put off from the vetting process will be back to the race or it will only be for the presidential candidates.
The Electoral Commission is yet to communicate whether anything ever since the decision came in. According to our sources, some members of the Electoral Commission are on a silent riot after the decision from the UCU Law Council described them as biased in the way they conducted their work and ordered that a commission of inquiry be put in place to check the members of the Electoral Commission.
Below are the candidates;
