Today being the day Makerere University Electoral Commission (EC) is expected to release a final list of duly nominated guild presidential candidates, we cannot ignore the controversy that has surrounded this process. Yesterday we published an article of Macxzzon Dickson Muhwezi (NRM candidate) whose name did not appear on the first list released by Twijukye Jackson, the Electoral Commission Chairperson.
According to Lilian Akatukwasa, the Makerere EC Vice Chairperson, Muhwezi’s name did not appear on the first list because he had not submitted his nomination forms. His name was later added on the list, which was later forwarded to the Academic Registrar for confirmation.
“Among the people that submitted their forms that we received, he had not submitted. So he claimed he had submitted to the Chairperson and he (Chairperson) had the forms. So early morning (yesterday) when we asked for the forms the Chair did not access them to us the fellow commissioners so we had nothing to base on to nominate him,” Akatukwasa told Campus Bee in a phone call.
Muhwezi’s missing name later brought some confusion which forced the commissioners to have a quick meeting with the Dean of Students. The Dean advised that all names of aspiring Guild Presidential candidates should be submitted to the Academic Registrar who will issue confirmation regarding their academic standing.
The submitted names include; Judith Nalukwago, Oguttu Aaron, Mutabarura Jackson, Joseph Tumusiime, Dickson Muhwezi as well as Mugerwa Jimmy. Only candidates without retakes/missing marks will be declared as duly nominated.
The Academic Registrar is expected to confirm the names later today ahead of elections slated for next week.
