Court has dropped charges against Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers who were accused of brutalizing Makerere University students during protests that sparked off over tuition increment last year.
Images and video footages which showed the soldiers forcing students to spool on the ground and beating students in their halls of residence went viral which attracted public reactions.
The two soldiers, Capt Richard Lubeera and Sunday Ocira who were accused of the brutality, were arrested and taken to Military C
ourt and also appeared before the military disciplinary committee.
The soldiers were first released on bail as court waited for a special investigation on the soldiers conduct during the University protests.
Failure of the affected students to show up in court and testify against the officers forced court to temporarily withdraw charges against the soldiers.
According to prosecution, Lubeera and Ocira neglected their duties of controlling persons under their command who ended up beating up Makerere University students during the protests.
