The chief Magistrates Court of Kampala at Mengo has awarded Makerere University student Samiiha Nalwooga shs30m in damages for the university’s refusal to release her results for close to two years now.
Nalwooga is a student of Biomedical Sciences at MAK’s College of Health Sciences. In a ruling delivered today around 4pm in the presence of the petite 4th-year student, Her Worship Esther Nasambu has condemned Makerere’s conduct of holding onto Nalwooga’s results without any justification or attempts to explain to her why this was so.
Her Worship Nasambu has further issued an injunction restraining Makerere from continuing to conceal the results from the student or treating her like a blacklisted student. “The applicant is awarded shs20m for breach of contract for four semesters; shs5m as exemplary damages for violation of the applicant’s rights and insubordination by her College’s Academic Registrar; and another shs5m in exemplary damages,” she ruled.
Makerere has been ordered to release the student’s results within one week from the date of the ruling, and also pay the costs Nalwooga has incurred in legal fees.
When Campus Bee reached out to Nalwooga for a comment, everything still seemed surreal for her, overjoyed and in disbelief at the same time. “I can’t believe this. I had given up. I never thought this case could ever end one day. It’s a good ruling and I am actually happy,” stated the student.
The student was represented by Counsel Isaac Ssemakadde of Centre for Legal Aid, who is fresh from winning another UGX 600M lawsuit in which he represented students of Nkumba University who filed a case against the university challenging a general fine it had slapped on them for striking.
