Court has ordered Nkumba University to refund over shs 600m to students after ruling that the university had collected the money from them illegally.
Following a penalty that was slapped onto Nkumba University students in 2014 after they staged a three-day strike, this money was collected as compensation for the damaged property.
However, in her ruling on October 17, High court Judge Elizabeth Ibanda Nahamya said the university acted irrationally by imposing a blanket penalty against all students on the Day Programme, regardless of whether or not they participated in the strike which resulted into the destruction of the university property.

Nahamya consequently ruled that the university should refund shs 150,000 to each student on Day Programme who had paid the fine. There are about 4,000 students on the university’s Day programme, thus translating into Shs 600 million which the university has to refund to the students.
In 2014, some aggrieved students protested the university’s policies like fees increment. They also complained about the deadline for registration, fees increment for missed papers and retakes. Consequently, the a strike happened and the university was temporarily closed and students sent home.
