Yesterday, Fort Portal High Court judge Justice David Batema issued an injunction suspending the closure and relocating of Makerere’s Fort Portal branch. This comes days after the university officially closed its Fort Portal branch because of low enrollment of students.
A number of students led by Moses Mugisa, a second year doing Business at the Fort Portal branch dragged the University to court. They asked court to order the university to be kept open until all the continuing students complete their courses.
Irrespective of the fact that the university agreed to offer free accommodation to all relocated students, and the fact that 52 out of the 65 continuing students accepted to relocate to Jinja campus, Moses and other students decided to take the issue to court.
Justice David Batema faulted Makerere University for taking a snap decision to close the campus and issued an injunction blocking the closure of the university.
