The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has lifted the suspension of contracts for all its staff , the Rector of the Institution Dr Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo says.
Addressing the media on Tuesday at IUIU-Kampala campus, Dr Sengendo said the removal of the suspension is following Government’s directive that universities should reopen and start teaching final students.
“The letter of the Chairman of Council and the Rector dated 13th May, 2020 , that communicated the decision to suspend staff’s contracts clearly stated that the suspension would ease when universities are allowed to reopen. Following the Government’s directive permitting universities to reopen and start teaching of final students , the suspension of all staff’s contracts is accordingly hereby lifted,”
“All staff are therefore expected to continue with their duties beyond the 31st May, 2020 as before. After seeking the guidance of the NCHE, the other staff, other than those listed in No.4 above, will be informed by the University when to report for duty and the guidelines to observe,” Says Dr Sengendo.
In No 4 , IUIU Rector is asking all Deans, Deputy Deans, Head of Departments, the lecturers of final year students to report to their respective campuses by the 26th May, 2020 , and plan to start lectures on the 3rd June, 2020.
Dr Sengendo said the Institution values its staff and refutes media reports that all the three IUIU campuses were closed and its staff were dismissed or laid off.
“The Islamic University in Uganda and all its campuses are fully open and functional except teaching that was suspended by the Government of Uganda as a way of controlling the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic . The University has never been closed since it started in 1988 , it is not closed now ; and Insha Allah (God willing) will remain open to eternity,”
“As a result of the lockdown, and travel and work place restrictions, most of staff are not physically present on campus and effectively not working. In addition, all students have since been returned to their families , save for a few international students who were unable to fly out of the country due to closure of airports,” Dr Sengendo says.
He further informed final year students to report back to their respective campuses as it was directed by President Yoweri Museveni.
“Following H.E the President of Uganda ‘s directive permitting universities to resume teaching only students who are in their final year of study as from 2nd June, 2020, we are glad to inform all the students of IUIU who are in their final year of study at both undergraduate and postgraduate , that they should report to their respective IUIU Campuses on 2nd June, 2020 ready to study. All students are strongly advised to report at the earliest and endeavour to fulfil all the obligations so as not to lose learning time,”
“The Academic Registrar in consultation with the various Deans of faculties will soon publish calendar of activities that will culminate on when teaching of remaining curriculum will end, start of examinations and off-campus activities , and finally, graduation,” Dr Sengendo says.
Islamic University in Uganda has four campuses namely Main Campus in Mbale, Kampala Campus in Kibuli, Females Campus in Kabojja and Arua Campus in Arua.
