A fourth year student at Makerere University pursuing Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering has awarded himself a degree after hopes of graduating were dimmed by the corona virus pandemic.
The unidentified finalist wore his suit with a graduation cap since he couldn’t land on the famous Makerere graduation gown- took pictures and conferred upon himself a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
This comes after the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine said that schools will be opened last during the ongoing partial lifting of the lockdown. While visiting Kisoro Hospital last month. Dr. Atwine said that reopening schools will increase the chances of the spread of corona virus. There are over 15 million Ugandans in school.
It is worth noting that before the President slapped a lockdown upon Uganda’s Economy, many students who happened to be University finalists were due to complete their final semesters. Some finalists at Uganda Christian University had been scheduled to start their final exams on 7th April, 2020 and later on graduate on 4th July, 2020 but all this was frustrated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
We wonder if the now graduand will go back to do his final exams when schools re-open and go ahead and graduate officially. We shall keep you posted.
