Breaking news just in, Uganda Christian University (UCU) has suspended all staff members that will not be providing essential services to the institution during this period of lockdown, citing shortage of resources.
In a memo from the university vice chancellor Rev. Canon Dr John Ssenyonyi, the university cries out to staff members about the lack of financial resources, whose gap was supposed to be filled by students that would enter in the Easter and Trinity intakes.
According to the vice chancellor, UCU is devising every means possible to ensure that the university does not get into a situation where it is “cash strapped.”
“UCU will pay salaries for the month of May 2020 only to members of staff that are on Full Time contract at the rate of 75% of what will be due to them. This is all the university will afford to pay.” Dr Ssenyonyi said in part.
The vice chancellor emphasised that this drastic measure shall be in place for as long as the current situation shall remain. He estimated that up to until August 2020, the situation may remain the same. Meaning staff shall not see salaries until maybe then.
